The preschool curriculum is adapted according to the needs
and interesst of the children and the bilingual process that
our institution offers. We use a variety of different
methodology strategies such as integrated curriculum projects,
centers, the Four Blocks Method, direct phonics instruction
and whole language activities to support learning. The
experiences provided to our children help them to become more
independent by increasing critical and analytical thinking,
problem solving skills and creativity.
The collaboration of parents in several events developed
in preschool has enriched the school. A parental group called
“VYDA” group works closely with the values developed in Kinder
5 and first grade by teaching classes directly to the
children . Another parental group is referred to as “VIP’s”
whose sole purpose is to offer support for the numerous
preschool events, activities and celebrations that happen
throughout the year.
Initial language instruction is conducted in the students’
native language. Therefore, we begin instruction in K-3 in
Spanish, introducing oral English in K-4 and K-5. We believe
and have observed that by providing a rich curriculum in
Spanish supplemented with an oral English program, entering
first grade students quickly transfer their Spanish reading
and writing skills into the English language.
ENGLISH INSTRUCTION:
Kinder 3 students are introduced to English through songs,
rhymes and guided play.
Kinder 4 students receive one block of instruction in
English daily. They begin with an oral language program
involving simple commands and instructions, expressing some of
their basic needs, singing songs and having fun with
language.
Kinder 5 students focus on developing basic comprehension
and oral language skills in English. The students begin to
acquire the skills necessary to understand short stories,
follow more complex instructions and to produce simple
sentences. Mathematics and oral language activities are also
conducted in English.
In first grade, the homeroom teacher instructs a majority
of all subject areas in English. This include Language Arts,
Science, Social studies and Math. While the emphasis is still
placed on oral language skills, pre-reading and pre-writing
activities are introduced in English.
