Each class in the Elementary section, excepting of sixth grade, has a full-time teaching assistant whose main function is to help students with difficulties and support the teachers in the development of various curricular activities. All assistants hold an educational degree and are responsible for supporting the homeroom teacher with all educational activities. Students in elementary all have a homeroom and receive specialist instruction in the areas of Spanish, Sociales (Colombian Social Studies), Art, Physical Education and Instructional Technology.

At Colegio Panamericano, students are encouraged to be creative, critical thinkers and self-dependent. We recognize the students as individuals, taking into account their needs, interests and own learning styles.
Last school year we implemented the three-way conference as an assessment strategy to involve the students, teachers and parents in a discussion centered on student achievement. In this kind of conference, the students (based on their own reflection) talk about their process of learning, teachers direct the conversation, and parents stimulate their children and commit to a plan of action for future learning according to the students’ needs.

In the elementary section, great importance is placed on reading in both languages. Our students are encouraged to do independent reading everyday in their homes for at least 30 minutes, 15 minutes in English and 15 minutes in Spanish. The entire school also participates with DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) each Friday during the first 15 minutes of the school day. Within this time, all members of the school community are expected to read. Annual book fairs are also conducted in order to provide the students with a variety of literature in English. Elementary students are paired up with High School reading buddies that meet monthly. Many teachers also hold overnight literature events to help promote a true love of reading. As a new initiative, family literacy nights are being planned to involve parents in this critical language arts activity.

Values also have a very important part in the Primary School. We think it is vital for the students’ growth as citizens to promote character development and moral values in all aspects of the curriculum and daily school life, and not just through isolated projects. Programs such as VYDA and the implementation of the advisory time in our curriculum support this essential feature of our students.
Finally, as we believe that social interactions are fundamental for the students’ learning processes, we care about providing students with activities where they can share their own opinions and prior knowledge. This definitively makes their learning a richer experience for everybody.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is based on international educational benchmarks (McRel) as well as on the standards provided by the Colombian Ministry of Education. Teachers from the same subject area meet every other week to discuss relevant issues related to the teaching of that particular area. Annually they revise the program in order to make the necessary adjustments to meet student needs as well as to develop new teaching methods. It is in the elementary section is where the academic foundation is created and fostered to assist the children throughout the rest of their lives

Three-Way Conferences

In addition to the previously mentioned reporting systems, the school schedules one and a half days during the first and second trimester where the students come to school with their parents to hold three-way conferences. In this collaborative technique, students lead the conference and use their portfolios to show their individual strengths as well as areas to improve. The role of the parents and the teacher is to motivate the students and help them organize a plan of improvement based on their particular needs. By using three-way conferences, students become more conscious about their own process of learning and their parents become yet more actively engaged in the overall learning process.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

We have nice extracurricular activities such as: Soccer, Tennis, Horse back reading, Taekwondo and Art. These activities are taught every week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 PM to 4:30PM
